Our 54th National Convention will be held in Baltimore, Maryland, July 10 - 14. As convention approaches, it brings back memories of my first convention in 1988 as the collegiate delegate for the Alpha Pi Chapter in Chicago, Illinois. This summer will be the 17th convention I have attended. 1988, I was in awe of the convention experience and our national organization. For the first time, I met Theta Phi Alphas, who were not members of my chapter. I talked to and took pictures with our leadership. Conversations with other collegians about their chapters resulted in learning great ideas to bring back to mine. I participated in business sessions pertinent to our entire organization, not just my chapter, and got to experience how parliamentary procedure worked. Addresses were exchanged (there were no cell phones, and long-distance phone calls were expensive at that time) of friends I had made, and I corresponded with them during the next school year. I left convention knowing I would be involved at the national level when I became an alumna, including a desire to be on the Grand Council and maybe even National President one day.

DEIA - Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access. This important acronym that was once unknown to me now holds a significant place in how I live my life and in the advancement and relevance of Theta Phi Alpha into the future. In 2020, Theta Phi Alpha created a DEIA Task Force to address equality in racial, religious, cultural, gender, socioeconomic, ability, and sexual diversity to ensure respectful, equitable, and dignified treatment of all members and potential new members. This task force provided the framework for the Fraternity to examine our governing documents, policies and procedures, and the experience we deliver to our members. While much work has been done, this work will only be complete if we work to be an organization where all our members feel included, valued, and seen.

Happy 2024! I recently read an article about choosing a word of the year. This word is meant to guide and remind you of your focus and what is important to you. After thinking about this article, I chose the word “present” for my word of the year. I’m a planner and often worry about things that might happen in the future. Sometimes, I do not appreciate what I am experiencing at a particular moment. That is why I chose the word present - to help me remember to be grateful for each day and each experience, no matter what that may be.

As 2023 ends, I am taking time to reflect and remember all the things I am thankful for. Theta Phi Alpha and our members are at the top of my list. I am so thankful to be a part of our fraternity and that I found a place to belong in college. I’m thankful for the members who mentored me throughout my service to Theta Phi Alpha and the experiences and friendships that continue to enrich my life. I’m thankful for those who came before me whose vision and leadership guided Theta Phi Alpha to remain a relevant organization today.

How do you model service for others in your life? Before joining Theta Phi Alpha, the extent of my service to others was donating canned goods to a schoolwide food drive at my high school during the holidays each year. I had never heard the term philanthropy. All that changed when I became a member of Theta Phi Alpha.

One of my favorite volunteer roles for Theta Phi Alpha happened in the early 1990's when I was the Emerging Chapter Advisor for the Beta Chi chapter at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO. There are few things that are more exciting to me in Theta Phi Alpha than a new chapter!
